Shawn Hollander, OD, Founder


With a passion for vision excellence, Dr. Shawn Hollander has been practicing optometry in Pinellas County since 1985. Combining a friendly, hometown touch with cutting-edge industry technology at Safety Harbor Optical, his long-term commitment to precision eye care is focused on every patient.

Dr. Hollander graduated with honors from the prestigious Pennsylvania College of Optometry, where he received his O.D. degree, Doctor of Optometry. He attended University of Miami in Coral Gables, attaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. Dr. Hollander is a lifelong member of the American Optometric Association, the Florida Optometric Association, and the Pinellas Society of Optometrists. He is the Tampa Bay Growth Administrator for Vision Source, North America’s Premier Network of Private Practice Optometrists.

Dr. Hollander practices Primary Care optometry with an emphasis on the latest technology and personalized care. Specialties include contact lenses, prescription eyeglasses, and refractive surgery co-management. Dr. Hollander performs comprehensive eye health examinations, and works with ophthalmologic subspecialties including vitreo-retinal, refractive, corneal, cataract, cosmetic reconstructive and glaucoma surgeons. As a primary care specialist, Dr. Hollander is able to detect, diagnose, and treat many vision conditions of the eye. At Safety Harbor Optical, the latest computerized diagnostic instrumentation is used, including scanning lasers to map the retina and measure the nerve fiber for early glaucoma detection.

Originally from New York City, Dr. Hollander believes giving back to the community is highly important. His many charitable causes include Safety Harbor Lions Club, the Maimonides Society, Optometry GIving Sight and Infant-See program. Dr. Hollander lives in Clearwater with his wife, Audrey. Dr. Hollander enjoys organic vegetable gardening at the Safety Harbor Community Garden, cycling, swimming, walking, playing with his three Shetland Sheepdogs, and rooting for the Rays.

Emily Hall, OD


Dr. Hall is a residency trained optometric physician who practices full scope optometry. She earned her bachelor degree in Biology, with a minor in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, at the University of Florida in 2014. While in undergrad, she completed a pre-optometry internship program at the Malcolm Randall VA Medical Center which inspired her interest in optometry. Dr. Hall began her pursuit of a career in optometry by attending Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. While in optometry school she became an American Academy of Optometry student fellow, was a member of Beta Sigma Kappa Honors Society, and participated in NSU College of Optometry Honors program. At NSU, she earned a second bachelors in Vision Science and her doctorate of Optometry. During her senior year, Dr. Hall was awarded the “Contact Lens Practice Management Award” and the Pinellas Optometric Association Scholarship Award. Dr. Hall graduated NSU with highest honors in 2018.

After optometry school, Dr. Hall pursued further education by completing a residency in primary care optometry at the Bay Pines VA Medical Center, in Bay Pines, Florida. At Bay Pines, she worked closely with ophthalmologists and gained further experience in ocular disease.

Dr. Hall enjoys giving back to the community and has devoted her time to several vision screenings, including: Special Olympics events, homeless medical camps in St. Petersburg, and athletic teams, such as the Atlanta Braves, UCF Knights and NSU Sharks college athletes. Dr. Hall is a member of the American Optometric Association, the Florida Optometric Association, and the Pinellas Optometric Association. Dr. Hall is originally from Clearwater and a previous patient of Dr. Hollander. Currently, she resides in Tampa with her husband, Dr. Noah Hackney, and their yellow lab, FInn. She enjoys running, weightlifting, and fishing.

Kurt Lotspeich, OD, PA


Dr. Lotspeich strives to build long-term relationships on a foundation of quality care and trust, and consistently provides the highest level of care for his valued patients. In addition to providing a high standard of ophthalmic care, Dr. Lotspeich understands the importance of communication in the doctor-patient relationship. He believes that listening skills are critical for excellent care and he prioritizes appropriate patient education.

He received his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry and his Bachelor of Science in Zoology, after attending California State University Long Beach and UCLA. He has been practicing optometry in Pinellas County since 1982 and is a member of the American Optometric Association and Florida Optometric Association.

Offering comprehensive eyecare for the entire family, Dr. Lotspeich prescribes all varieties of contact lenses and eyeglasses. He has a special interest in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases including cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, dry eye disease, and emergency eye care. Advocating the importance of a healthy lifestyle and good nutrition of bodies and eyes, Dr. Lotspeich regularly attends continuing medical education classes to keep current on the newest ocular and medical technologies. Giving back to the community is a priority for Dr. Lotspeich. For several years, he has organized and conducted elementary school vision screenings in rural areas of Tampa Bay. He is bilingual in English and Spanish. A native of Southern California, his wife Rebecca is also an optometrist. Dr. Lotspeich enjoys an active lifestyle of boating, golf and traveling.

Dr. Jose Santos, OD


Dr. Santos was born and raised in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.  He graduated from the Interamerican School of Optometry in 2000 and has been practicing since.  He has acquired vast experiences in LASIK, PKP, DSAEK, IOL (cataract surgery), glaucoma, and macular degeneration  while working among opthamologist at St. Luke’s Cataract and Laser Institute. Dr. Santos has been passionately serving Tampa Bay for over 10 years.  He is also a proud husband and father of two children. 

Geno Spata, Licensed Optician


Targeting the right eyewear choice for every patient is the priority for Safety Harbor Optical Licensed Optician Geno Spata. Combining cutting edge technology and over 25 years of extensive optical experience, Geno has been engaging Safety Harbor Optical patients since 2007. His certifications include American Board of Opticianry and National Board of Contact Lens Examiners. A California native, Geno and his wife, Shirlene, moved to the Clearwater area in 2005. Running, boating, travel and photography top Geno’s favorite pastimes.

Karen Augustowski, Optometric Technician


Safety Harbor Optical’s soft-spoken and gentle guide to the pre-examination ophthalmic testing, Karen Augustowski is genuinely interested in the best experience for patients. A Safety Harbor Optical team member since 2000, Karen arrived in Pinellas County in 1995 after growing up in New Jersey, and spending time in Pennsylvania. Reading, walking, baking and watching old movies top her hobbies.

Rhonda Russell, Optical Technician


Citing the very friendly atmosphere at Safety Harbor Optical, Rhonda Russell is back for the second time at Safety Harbor Optical. Since returning from her home state of Illinois, Rhonda is assisting patients with eyeglass fitting, selections and measurements. Outgoing and energetic, Rhonda loves being a mom to her two daughters, and enjoys boating, cycling and running.
